Have you ever noticed that we are surrounded by noise? No matter what restaurant you go to, airport you are in, or doctor’s office, whatever and wherever you are, there is always some sort of music, or news, or sports blaring at you. Frequently it’s a loud tv screen and don’t worry if it isn’t on, someone will turn it on. There’s always some talking head, some political pundit or whatever to tell us what to think. And then there’s the parent who won’t tell little precious to put a lid on it.
I was having lunch with some friends at a very upscale new restaurant one afternoon. The food was delicious and the service was great. Only trouble — there were 9 of us and some sort of music was playing too loud. We had to YELL at each other to be heard. I know. The acoustics were bad and all that but think how much more pleasant the lunch would have been IF THE MUSIC WERE OFF or a little lower! Were they playing it for the husband and wife who had nothing to say to each other?
The other day I went to a relatives’ funeral in a small town. After the service there wasn’t the usual feast for the mourners so I decided to get something to eat on my own. It was late– around 9 PM — and the only thing open was a Sports Bar of sorts. I sat down and ordered right away. They weren’t busy. I asked the server name of Nancy if there was a spot where there were no tvs blaring. She looked at me as if I was crazy.
I suppose I am but give me a minute. What’s wrong with a little solitude without noise? A romantic dinner with someone you love? Conversation with friends? Are we as a society afraid to think on our own? Does all the noise keep us from pinpointing what’s important to us? Wake up and try listening to –sssh– the sound of silence or maybe even your own thoughts!
